Philodendrons are among the most exotic and beautiful tropical plants, with approximately 400 species worldwide. One notable species is the Philodendron erubescens, also known as the ‘Red Emerald’, native to Costa Rica and the rainforests of South America.

Philodendron erubescens is a vigorous climbing plant highly valued for its striking leaves. Its heart-shaped leaves feature reddish undersides, creating a beautiful display as they cascade down a growing surface. However, it’s important to note that like other philodendrons, Philodendron erubescens is toxic to both people and pets, so it should be placed in a safe location.

In its natural habitat, this plant can grow up to 60 feet and sometimes converts to fully epiphytic growth if its connection with the ground is severed. However, as a houseplant, it typically remains around 3 feet in length, making it easy to manage and care for.

How to Grow Philodendron Erubescens From Seed

Prepare the pot: Fill a fresh pot with soil, leaving about 1/3 inch of space below the rim.
Plant the seeds: Plant the Philodendron erubescens seeds about 1/3 inch deep in the moist soil.
Cover with plastic wrap: Place a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the pot to create a greenhouse effect, trapping moisture inside to aid germination.
Keep the soil moist: Check the soil regularly to ensure it remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Provide proper light and temperature: Place the pot in an area with bright, indirect light and maintain temperatures between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Wait for germination: Within two weeks to two months, the seeds should sprout.
Care for the seedlings: Once the seeds have sprouted, care for the seedlings as usual.

Propagating Blushing Philodendron

Select a healthy stem from a full – grown plant and cut a 4-6 inch section just below a node. Remove the lower leaves and plant the cutting in moist soil. Place it in a warm, humid location with indirect light and water regularly. Roots should develop within a few weeks, and once established, you can transplant the cutting into a larger pot. You may also propagate the cutting in water. In such a case, transfer the plant to a pot with potting soil after it develops roots.

Blushing Philodendron is adaptable to low light conditions but will thrive in bright, indirect sunlight or partial sunlight.
To encourage lush foliage, place it where it can enjoy filtered bright sunlight.

Soil:

Use well-draining, moist soil. A mix of rich loamy and sandy soil with peat moss works well, with a pH of 5.8 – 6.5.
Add pumice, perlite, or orchid bark to the soil to aid proper drainage.

Water:
